Where You’ll See the Changes
The first place you’ll notice these updates is within the Updates tab. This section will now feature WhatsApp sponsored content Updates tab as part of Meta introducing ads to WhatsApp. Specifically, WhatsApp Status Ads will appear in the “Status” feature, which is WhatsApp’s version of Stories. Rest assured, your personal and group chats will remain untouched and free from advertisements. Meta has been quite clear that they want to keep private messaging uninterrupted, so the Updates tab is the designated space for this new strategy. This is how WhatsApp will show ads.
More Than Just Ads
Beyond the ads, WhatsApp is also introducing two other key features aimed at furthering WhatsApp Monetization. One of the big questions users have is about privacy. WhatsApp has stated that its new ad experience will use limited, non-intrusive data for personalization. This includes information like your location, language, followed channels, and how you interact with ads. If you’ve linked your WhatsApp account to Meta’s Accounts Center, your preferences from Facebook and Instagram might also influence the ads you see. Importantly, Meta assures users that they will not share or sell phone numbers, and your private messages, calls, and group activities will remain end-to-end encrypted.
A Long-Awaited Shift
This long-awaited official launch of WhatsApp ads in the Status area has finally happened. Rumors regarding an advertising plan for WhatsApp have been circulating, with prior plans on hold. But WhatsApp executive Will Cathcart assured in 2023 that ads were indeed ongoing, and now they are up.
