Even though the iPhone 17 launch is still a few months away, leaks and reports have already started giving us a glimpse into what Apple could be planning next. And if these early details are anything to go by, photography lovers have something exciting to look forward to—especially if you’re eyeing the iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Apple May Finally Give the Telephoto Lens a 48MP Boost

One of the most talked-about upgrades is coming to the telephoto camera. In recent years, Apple has steadily improved camera hardware—first introducing a 48-megapixel main camera on the iPhone 14 Pro, then giving the ultra-wide lens a similar 48-megapixel upgrade in the iPhone 16 Pro. Now, it looks like the telephoto camera is next in line for that same treatment on the iPhone 17 Pro models.

If that happens, all three rear cameras—the wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto—could feature 48-megapixel sensors. That’s a big deal. It means sharper photos, especially when zooming in, and better overall clarity even at long distances. There’s no word yet on whether Apple will redesign the 5x zoom experience in the Camera app, but this hardware shift alone would be a strong step forward.

Multi-Camera Video Recording Might Finally Go Native

Another interesting leak points to the possibility of multi-camera video recording finally becoming a native feature. While third-party apps have supported it for a while, Apple has never brought this feature to its own Camera app. But that might change with the iPhone 17 Pro lineup.

Imagine being able to shoot video using multiple lenses—say, the ultra-wide and telephoto—at the same time, without using any third-party software. That could be a game-changer for content creators, vloggers, and everyday users who want more creative freedom in their videos. It’s still unclear if this feature will require special hardware, but for now, it seems to be reserved for the Pro models only.

Selfie Camera Could Jump from 12MP to 24MP

One area that has remained almost unchanged for years is the front-facing camera—but that too might finally get an upgrade. Reports suggest that the TrueDepth selfie camera will jump from 12-megapixel to 24-megapixel in the iPhone 17 series. And here’s the good news: this change may not be limited to just the Pro versions—it could also apply to the standard iPhone 17 and the lightweight iPhone 17 Air.

This bump in resolution should lead to noticeably better selfies and clearer video calls, especially in low-light settings. Considering the front camera hasn’t seen a major spec update in a while, this is a much-needed refresh.

A New Rear Camera Design Could Be on the Way

From everything we’ve heard so far, it’s clear Apple is continuing to put serious focus on camera performance—especially in the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. These devices are likely to offer the most advanced features for photography and videography fans.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to appeal to users who prefer a lighter, thinner phone that still delivers a solid camera experience—just without all the Pro-level bells and whistles.
